Shrines
Shrines in Breath of the Wild is one of the most important things that the player can do in terms of getting stronger. Of course there are other ways to get stronger: like upgrading armor or getting better weapons. Shrines do one of two things once you completed 4 of them; increasing max hearts by one or increasing max stamina by 1/5 of a wheel. Of course Shrines will be where you will be spending most of your time early on finding the locations of due to the fact that there are 120 total Shrines.
Shrines are scattered across the world which the player then has to find and activate them to unlock the fast travel to it. Some shrines also require some special thingy to be done to find the Shrine. These special task are considered Shrine Quests which can do many a things to get the shrine to appear. From arranging certain things in order, to having a rock struck by lightning, or even shooting through something can complete the Shrine Quest and get the Shrine.
Most Shines have a certain task that the player has to do once inside of them. These tasks can be fighting an enemy or solving a puzzle. There are a lot of puzzle shrines out in the world but only three distinct types. The first is a Minor Test of Strength, this enemy has the least amount of attack and health compared to the other Tests of Strength. The other Tests of Strength are Moderate and Major; the enemy inside of these all have the same attack patterns even if the terrain changes a little bit.
Shrine Quests do not normally have a puzzle or a test of strength inside of them, instead it normally is Blessing which is just a chest and the monk which will give you your spirit. The spirits that the monks give is what allows you to upgrade your health or stamina, once you have four of them of course.
Shrines also have hidden or not so hidden chests in them. There is at least one in every single shrine if not more. If the player collects all the chests in a shrine, on the mini map a tiny little chest next to the Shrines name. Some of the chests contain one of a kind items, mainly only armor, some also contain rare materials that may be helpful; the rest of the chests contain mainly weapons or rupees. After you complete all 120 Shrines, you will get a special set of armor.
